I have been having a lot of annoying with the latest ubuntu… Help is welcome:

A list of some of the annoyances:

Printing to print-server that requires samba authentication. This worked fine in 11.04 and 10.04.. In 11.10 it never authenticated. In the end I had to use a custom backend that uses smbclient directly. It shows the same auth. popup, but printing works.

Nautilus keeps drawing my background.. Even if I disable it in dconf-editor. Very very annoying.

gajim does not start with python error about keychain..

Strange lockups off the laptop on shutdown.

Printing directly to color laserjet fails. It keeps telling me printer is busy, works fine with same settings from 11.04.

if I disable wifi and turn it on again (using HW switch) I have to type: nmcli nm wifi off and nmcli wifi on a to get it working again.

lightdm shutdown button does exactly nothing.. always have to switch to terminal to shutdown.

etc.

It is that we use ‘ubuntu’ as sort of ‘default’ at work, but I am considering switching to something else..

With the last several releases things I use for work got worse and worse every release. It became harder and harder to use openbox+tint2 as desktop, etc.

Installation at some point will trigger an X crash and reset.. (so you have to start over again configuring..) this goes into an endless loop.

So instead, switch to terminal, run

sudo oem-config-remove

(see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/precise/+source/ubiquity/+bug/856293)

and reboot (sudo reboot).

Then, before installing the ti omap drivers/utils do a full apt-get update and apt-get upgrade and apt-get dist-upgrade then install the ti omap stuff ( the link in the unity dock). If you do it the wrong way around, you will loose X. (because the video driver could not be build).

(to fix this, do the apt-get upgrade/dist-upgrade and rerun dpkg-reconfigure on the -dkms package.)

I tried ubuntu 11.10 beta on my laptop (amd k345 + 6 gig ram) and it been a really disappointing trip.

(I don’t have time write a long story, so bulletpoints for now)

Pro’s:

Looks better. lightDM looks nice.

Unity feels more polished then in previous version.

Unity 2d looks good and works nicely similar as the 3d version.

Con’s:

Installation was buggy. (hanged after network on first time, could not find kernel the second time (wth?))

Booting laptop takes ages (several minutes) it just seems to wait doing nothing.

Energy usage is high: 11-12W (without wifi) vs. 8-9W previously. This is because of X now waking up the cpu 60 time a sec?

STA-broadcom wifi drivers do not work. Opensource drivers are very power hungry (14W with wifi vs. 9-10W with wifi previously).

2d ubuntu shows a 1px line on top of the screen full of corruption (see screenshot below)

3d ubuntu: Alt-tab (application switcher) stays on the screen randomly. (see screenshot)

3d ubuntu: Application Z ordering is screwy. terminal can be on-top of dash (see screenshot).

3d ubuntu: Gets slow after 30-40 minutes of use. Animations are jumpy. (could be video card driver.. it is ati after all)

on a side note, gmpc 11.8 seems to get little attention, could be a good thing and a bad thing.

I <del datetime="2011-06-28T09:12:15+00:00">have</del> am thinking about buying an Asus 10,1″ EEE Pad transformer. The reason I am looking at one is very simple, I need a usable PIM, mostly focused on a good agenda. For the rest I do not really see the use. I have an Ereader that works fine, last ages on a charge and is light, portable and easy to read. I have an mp3 player for music, etc.

I have no intention to replace any one of these.

Ok, going to keep it short, not going to type another A4 full for the 3rd time because pen-dactyl and wordpress do not work together. In short: I got a good laptop, with good battery life time I can easily use as agenda. I often carry it around, or am behind a PC at work/home. So I do not need another ‘portable’ gadget that just fills this gap.

What I need is a linux Agenda application that does the following:

SIMPLE. (Like dates)

Sync with google apps (dates failes on this)

Offline google sync (evolution, and therefor dates fails on this one for me, so does lightning (mozilla))

easy adding of events

day, week, 2 week, month view

etc.

A honeycomb or ios tablet will solve all these issues for me, they can do all this. But I want something for my laptop (that does not involve moving to windows or osX)

Anybody has a solution for linux? It seems pim is one of the biggest FAILS on linux yet.

I got so frustrated asking/pleading and begging for help, that I added a nagscreen to GMPC last week.
This resulted in a lot of people bitching at me complaining and saying they would have helped without the nagscreen

Now lets first correct one thing:
1. I have been asking for help on a regular basis for the past one and a half year.
2. GMPC had a popup that asked (a single time) for help.

This did not get me any help? So saying you would not help me with GMPC because of the nagscreen is just to make yourself feel good and have another excuse todo nothing. (nothing wrong with you not wanting to help, but it is very weak to blame it on me for this reason).

Anyway after 1 1/2 year, I think I am going to give up. I have been asking for help with f.e. the manual because I am not good at this (dyslexia), testing code and maintaining. I asked this because I was busy finishing graduating (and now I am working full time) and Illness causes me to have very little energy left after a working day and in the weekend. I know everybody is busy with lot of stuff, so if it is not possible to get enough help I guess the only path is to abandon GMPC. This would be a shame because it is the oldest maintained MPD client and the only one that did not get abandoned at one or another point in time.

p.s. I removed the nagscreen 2 days ago, so it only been there for a short while.
